Mentor
Ryan Byers: The Mentor Who Reads the Field
Former Kapalua teaching pro. Former professional golfer. Past President of Calabasas Country Club. Ryan's real gift isn't a swing fix — it's reading people. He sees what you're made of before you do, and he understands the game at a level most golfers never reach.
Every January, the golf world watches the PGA Tour open its season on a clifftop in Maui. The cameras find the trophy ceremony at Kapalua. They never find the teaching tee — the quiet corner of the resort where a professional stands for years with a range full of strangers, fixing grips, rebuilding swings, and handing people a game they get to keep for the rest of their lives.
That corner is where Ryan Byers comes from. And it's why he's a mentor at Elite Golf Consulting.
Who is Ryan Byers?
Ryan is a former teaching professional at Kapalua in Maui, a former professional golfer, a three-time club champion, and past President of Calabasas Country Club. Today he's partnered with fellow pro Matt Siporin in Links Golf Collective, and he mentors golfers here at Elite Golf Consulting.
There are two educations in professional golf. The first is playing the game at its highest level — feeling what pressure does to a five-footer, learning what a scorecard really costs. Ryan has that one. The second is rarer: teaching it. Standing on the lesson tee at one of the most celebrated golf destinations on earth, meeting a different golfer every hour — different swing, different story, different reason for being there — and finding the one adjustment that unlocks them. Ryan has that one too.
Put those together and you get the thing we value most in a mentor: someone who doesn't just understand golf swings. He understands golfers.
His strength: reading the field
Ask anyone who's played with Ryan and they'll tell you the same two things. First: he's always there with a helping hand — a read on your putt, a fix for your takeaway, a name you needed to know. Second: he's usually got a little action going. A few dollars here, a press there, something friendly riding on the back nine.
Those aren't two different guys. They're the same skill. Ryan's philosophy is simple: you can really judge someone's character when they put their money where their mouth is. A friendly wager is the fastest character test golf ever invented, and Ryan has seen every type of player this game produces — the ones who press when they're down, the ones who go quiet when it's time to settle, and the rare ones who play exactly the same whether the bet is a dollar or a dinner.
He can usually tell you which one you are by the third hole. Kindly. Probably while helping you fix your grip.
That's what "reading the field" means, and it's a bigger part of golf than most players ever admit. Golf isn't just executed with your hands — it's played between people. Knowing your playing partners, knowing the moment, knowing yourself under pressure: that's a scoring skill, the same as driving it in play. Ryan teaches it because he's spent a career studying it, one stranger at a time, one match at a time.
The line he teaches by
Ask Ryan for his favorite quote and he doesn't reach for a motivational poster. He reaches for Bobby Jones — the greatest amateur the game has ever produced:
"I never learned anything from a match that I won."
Sit with that, because it's the whole philosophy of improvement in one sentence. Wins feel good and teach nothing — they confirm what you already had. Losses itemize exactly what's missing. The golfer who treats every defeat as a lesson plan improves at a rate the trophy-counters can't touch.
That's understanding the game at a deeper level — and it's the exact philosophy Elite Golf Consulting is built on. Every round tracked. Every round journaled. Today we improved because… Ryan just happens to have taught that ritual for years before we ever built an app around it.
What he builds now
With Links Golf Collective, Ryan and Matt Siporin put on high-level golf experiences that blend competition, camaraderie, and real connection — the flagship being the Streamsong Shootout, a two-man team event at Streamsong Resort in Florida, September 2–6, 2026. It's the same belief that runs through everything Ryan does: golf tests what you're made of, and the people you play it with matter as much as the score.
Where to find Ryan
You can find Ryan in two places. Inside Elite Golf Consulting, where he mentors golfers of every level on the one thing this game is built on: improvement. And inside The Country C1ub, where his full member spotlight tells the whole story — Kapalua, Calabasas, and the road to Links Golf Collective.
